Your students want to learn QuickBooks Online for small business management. Our textbooks not only prepare them for certification exams, but also give them the confidence to do bookkeeping for their own companies and teach them practical workplace skills.
Intuit shares this same commitment to “Powering Prosperity.” To achieve this goal, they are always testing improvements to QuickBooks Online’s interface. Once they decide what is most popular with users, it becomes the new experience for everyone. Every time you begin a new group of students, you will find small improvements.
We release a new edition of our best-in-class textbook every year. Sometimes, if major changes warrant, we will even update new pages during the year.
We are proud to introduce you to our 2023 edition of QuickBooks Online Fundamentals and Complete. Not only are they filled with small changes so that the instructions continue to match the interface, but they also feature several major developments released over the last year.
A Renovated Customer and Vendor Experience
Instead of square cards with tabs that users overlooked when creating a new Customer or Vendor, you’ll now see their details down the right side of the screen. Scroll down to see all possible settings on one screen!
An Improved Chart of Accounts Experience
This same all-in-one-column approach is also used for the Chart of Accounts. The steps to define the Account Type and Subaccounts are completely new. Once you get the hang of the new set of fields, it’s nice to be able to visualize the account’s placement at the bottom, before you click Save!
A Not-Quite-Finished-Being-Improved Chart of Accounts
A revised Chart of Accounts (COA) was introduced in 2022, and last summer we rewrote the books to accommodate it. However, Intuit received loud feedback because most users found it long and cumbersome. They are now testing a short essential Chart of Accounts instead.
This means, unfortunately, that when you create student files for the Apply Your Knowledge end-of-chapter exercise and the Case Study at the midpoint and end of the books, we have no way of controlling which COA your students will see.
We have added instructions for students who receive the newest COA list to erase it and import the one that matches the book. A new Excel file with the correct COA has been added to the Classroom Files folder. By our 2024 edition next year, we will incorporate Intuit’s final decision into the text.
In 2022, Intuit finally solved the dilemma on what to do when customer refunds made the daily merchant services income negative, meaning that their credit card processer pulled money from their checking accounts instead of making a deposit. In the previous edition, students learned a workaround. In the 2023 edition, this workaround has been removed, and students will have the opportunity to properly process a deposit that contains refunds.
Intuit completely redesigned and simplified the Payroll setup process. Chapter 13 in QBO complete has been completely rewritten. Instead of walking through the Payroll Setup Wizard that was subject to change, students will now view the Payroll Center in its natural state, exploring the Payroll Center and its settings as they appear on the screen.
The Sales Tax Center continues to be refined, as Intuit is committed to making sure small businesses are collecting the proper amount of tax. Our instructions and screenshots have been updated to reflect the latest user experience.
YinYang Graphic Design
YinYang Graphic Design is a separate company is used for the Case Study at the end of QuickBooks Online Fundamentals 2023, and as the Capstone project at the end of QuickBooks Online Complete 2023. This company is now a Sole Proprietorship instead of a single-member LLC, reflecting the national trend of entrepreneurs starting their own companies.
