Students can read the book two ways, and switch between them under the settings cog in the reader toolbar. Modern is the book as a web page, with the hands-on steps and the practice quiz built in. Classic is the printed page, exactly as published. Modern is where students start.

Both modes use the printed page numbers, so an assignment written as page numbers works in either. Highlights, notes and search work in both, and switching keeps the student's place.
Two buttons worth knowing about
When a student in your class selects text in Modern, two options appear. Ask instructor sends you a message about it, with the page attached. Report problem goes to us and the book's author, not to you, for mistakes in the book itself. A student who hasn't joined your class yet sees Ask instructor too: it asks for your class code, then brings them back to the page.
Pin your class to Classic
Open the class, choose Class settings, and turn on Classic reader only. Students then see only Classic. Nothing is lost: the quiz and hands-on steps move to the review page and the progress panel. You keep both modes yourself.
