Your demo group is a sandbox with practice students in it. When you decide to teach with the platform for real, you do not start over. On the demo dashboard there is a button called Use this for real, and it creates a real group for you in one short form.

This article covers exactly what that button does, what it leaves behind, and the four things worth doing in the new class straight afterwards.

What Adopt actually does

Adopt creates a brand-new, empty group and marks it real. It does not transform the demo, and it does not copy anything out of it. In one action you get:

• A new group named whatever you type, owned by you.
• Its own group code: a fresh eight-character code, different from the demo's.
• An instructor approval request filed on your behalf, if you do not already have one on file.
• A roster row for every email address you pre-stage in the form.

That is the whole of it. The new class starts with an empty roster, no textbook attached yet, and the standard group controls. You choose the book and the settings afterwards, on the class itself.

Fill in the form

   Open the demo class

   Go to All Classrooms in the left sidebar and click the one carrying the Demo tag.

   Press Use this for real

   It sits at the top right of the dark header band. A dialog opens, headed Adopt this for your real class.

   Name the class and the course

   Five short fields, all required. The table below says what each one is for.

   Pre-stage your student emails, if you have them

   Optional. Paste one address per line into the last box. Lines that hold no valid email address are skipped without complaint, so a pasted column with a stray heading row is fine.

   Press Adopt this for my real class

   You land on the new group's dashboard. That is the page you will live on for the rest of the semester.

Teacher verification, and what waits on it

Real groups belong to verified instructors, so if your teacher status has not been confirmed yet, adopting files that request for you at the same moment. You do not fill in a second form.

While that is in review, the new class page carries a banner reading Verifying your teacher status. The wording on it is the promise: your group is set up, someone is checking your institution, and you will hear back within one business day. You can keep working on the class the entire time.

One thing genuinely waits: pre-staged invitations are held, not sent. They sit on the roster tagged Awaiting approval and no email goes out. The resend button is deliberately hidden on those rows, because nothing can be mailed on an unconfirmed teacher's say-so. The instant your verification clears, every held invitation is mailed automatically. You do not have to come back and press anything.

What does not carry over

It is worth being blunt about this, because the demo looks so much like a working class:

• The practice students do not come with you. Alex Morgan and the rest stay in the demo. Your real roster starts empty.
• None of the demo's scores, reading time, or analytics move across. Every number on the new dashboard starts at zero, which is correct. Nobody has read anything yet.
• The textbook is not attached yet. Until you pick one there is no Textbook link in the class header for you or your students.
• Settings do not travel. Any toggles you flipped while exploring the demo apply to the demo, and adopting does not carry over your saved group defaults either. Set them again on the real class.
• The group code is new. A demo group never shows a code at all; the one your students need is in the header of the real class.

The first four things to do in the new class

   Attach the textbook

   Open Class settings and follow Customize chapters, quizzes & certification at the bottom of the sheet. Pick the book in the selector at the top of that page and press Save curriculum.

   Set your group controls

   Same panel. Five switches: smart grading for graded exercises, the AI study assistant, Classic reader only, tracking student progress, and whether quiz results are released to students. Each one has a plain-English description under it.

   Invite your students

   Press Invite students in the header. You get a single-address box with Send Invite, an Add whole class button for a pasted list, and your group code with a copy-ready join link to drop into your LMS.

   Sort out who has the book

   Seats in the left sidebar shows who in the class has one. Everyone still without a seat is ticked for you, and the button reads Give N students a seat. A seat is one student's paid access to the textbook for a year, and seats work in any of your classes. A student with no seat still joins, still appears on the roster, and can buy their own copy.

The invite panel has a third button, Create accounts, for students who cannot easily use email. It is intended for post-secondary and adult learners only, and each first password is shown to you exactly once. Nothing can read it back afterwards. Read the dedicated article before using it.

If you teach more than one section

Adopt once. While your verification is still being reviewed, that single request is tied to the class you just adopted, so it is cleanest to set up one section and wait for the confirmation email.

Once you are verified, Create classroom at the top of All Classrooms makes as many further sections as you need, each with its own code and its own roster. Seats you have bought are not tied to a class. They work across all of them.
